Singing for
53 years
The choir's
present conductor is Edna Blackwell, who took over the
running of the Bath Cantata Group in 1978. Founded in
1955, the Bath Cantata Group has established a
reputation for tackling a wide range of choral music,
ancient and modern.
Over the years, the 40-strong choir
has performed hundreds of works, from classic sacred
standards like Haydn and Mozart Masses to just one
venture into Gilbert and Sullivan. Twentieth century
composers such as Benjamin Britten, Lennox Berkeley,
Nicolas Maw, Aaron Copland, Bernstein, Poulenc,
Stravinsky and Michael Tippett (a former patron and
conductor of the group) have featured widely in our
programmes.
Most performances are supported by an
orchestra of local musicians, most of whom receive no
fees for their work. Many have been playing with the
group for more than 15 years.
